POPULATION AGEING – MULTIDIMENSIONAL CHALLENGE FOR MODERN SOCIETY

Guest Editor: Jelena Stojilković Gnjatović – Faculty of Geography University of Belgrade

While 20th century was marked by the population growth, the 21st century is already regarded as population ageing era. It represents is a profound demographic shift caused by a growing number and proportion of older individuals, driven by declining fertility rates and extending longevity. Thus, this phenomenon can have multidimensional consequences that could restructure global demographics, impacting economic productivity, pension, healthcare and social systems. The positive demographic momentum from the past is turning negative in the modern society, calling for the various institutional adaptations. We are calling for the rigorous scientific investigations of the causes and consequences of population ageing in relation to the wide range of demographic, socio-economic, medical and political ramifications.

Authors are welcome to explore diverse population ageing aspects and share their research that relates (but it is not restricted) to the following perspectives and implications with adequate policy recommendations:

  • Demographic: interrelation between population ageing and fertility decline, reproduction, mortality & longevity; theoretical (re)considerations
  • Socio-Economic: shortages in labor market induced by population ageing and role of migration; intergenerational support with gender perspective; the burden of population ageing for pension and social protection system
  • Medical and Public Health: (multi)morbidity, epidemiological transition and older population; long-term care in ageing society; age-friendly environments

Political: political demography and population ageing; changing age composition and voting behavior; implications of age-related political preferences
